Group Therapy


PROCESS/SUPPORT GROUP FOR ADULT CHILDREN OF MENTALLY ILL PARENTS

Group is open to adults 21 and over, 8 week enrollment, sliding scale fee ($30-$80)

What: Group for adult children of a living, mentally ill primary caregiver
When: Every other Wednesday, 7-8:30 pm for 8 meetings (Next start date will be Fall of 2019, exact date to be decided)
Where: New Perspectives Center for Counseling, 5026 Geary Blvd., San Francisco

This group is designed to help individuals manage the anger, grief, and loss of having a mentally ill parent. Participants must be willing to create a warm and validating environment with others and explore topics with the group such as wondering what “normal” is, the fear of repeating dysfunctional patterns, and how having a mentally ill parent affects one’s relationships and connections in daily life. Individuals can only join a group at the beginning of the 8 week cycle, and must be able to commit to making it to 7 of the 8 sessions. Groups meet every other week. Participants must demonstrate financial need to qualify for sliding scale.

DBT SKILLS TRAINING GROUP

Group is open to adults 21 and over, ongoing enrollment, sliding scale fee*

What: DBT Skills Training Group
When: Thursdays, 6-7:30 pm
Where: 5026 Geary Blvd., San Francisco

DBT skills are designed to help individuals manage the emotional and relational crises of their lives. The skills group uses acceptance and change strategies within a warm and validating environment, emphasizing mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance. Groups meet weekly and are payable at the beginning of the month. This is a low-fee group: participants must demonstrate financial need based on income. Participants must also be in weekly therapy.

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT)

New Perspectives offers DBT informed individual psychotherapy on a limited basis. DBT treatment is most effective when it includes individual therapy and a weekly skills training group.
